Maude the Mystic by Author C. M. Lloyd Child of the Elves book 1 Elven Quest Trilogy

If you follow our twitter feeds at http://www.twitter.com/childoftheelves you would have read the tweets on Sunday July 19, 2009 concerning the most fantastic mystic I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

I went to the shore last weekend. Wonderful time, DE. in summer. Now, to the story...

I had just arrived and decided to go down to the beach.
It was evening twilight... my favorite time of the day.

As I walked toward the ocean a woman caught my eye, she was laying on the beach in a half lay - half sitting position. The wind was blowing. The waves were crashing... you would have thought the night was perfect for her.

To me, I saw a mystic, a rare sight in the United States.
I was so caught off guard by her in the distance that I found myself walking in her direction.

As a author you wonder multiple things. Mostly you are obsessed with the particular story you are writing...

She was sitting - laying on the beach minding watching the waves and was ignoring others who were making fun of her and cracking jokes.

"To me, she was an awesome person, who lived the life of a mystic.
Her clothes were draping, her hair was long and withered.

Her nails were long and un-kept.
Her face shown the years and a history most would never understand
and a walk not many people would walk.
but, lying beside her was the most amazing staff that I had ever seen.

"Does your staff have a name?" I said, as I caught her off guard...

and I believe at first she thought I too, was making fun of her.
But of course I was not making fun of her, because to someone like me...
she was the most amazing person that I had ever had the pleasure of meeting.

When I repeated myself once more and asked her

"Does your staff have a name?" she shouted "I make them too!"

The smile must have gone from my left ear to my right ear... because she
still thought I was making fun of her. (it shows how cruel some people really are to others that they just don't think are "Normal".

By this time I think the 40 + people that were making fun of her when I had walked up
thought I too was making fun of her because they became quite and their comments faded in the wind as if waiting to hear what I was saying to her.

I simply smiled even wider and said even louder.

"I absolutely love your staff. I understand that you made it. Does it have a name?"

She belted... "Yes, No... I mean, it is a staff of
Power!"

"Yes!" ( I screamed silently to myself)
I finally cracked through her tough skin and now she realized that I was actually standing right beside her and that I was
truly speaking to her and that I actually thought that she was the most amazing person.

So, now I have her attention and of course the attention of about 40 people standing there and with the greatest honor I think I have ever had the pleasure of doing.

I raised my voice, looked her in the eyes and held out my hand in a gesture to shake her hand and start the whole conversation over.

"How rude of me, my name is C. M. Lloyd and I am a fantasy author
and I am honored to have made your acquaintance this evening."

She shook my hand back and as she left go of my hand I asked her,

"May I ask your name?"

I think she was afraid to tell me her name or even to belt it out loud and as I raised my eyebrows at her prompting her response, she finally said in a low voice.

"My name is Maude."

"Maude, It is very nice to meet you." I said with a smile.
"Your staff of power is exquisite. You have done a wonderful job in its design and for that I applaud you. From the stand point of a fantasy author, You, Maude are what we write novels based on."

I stopped at this point to allow everyone there the chance to soak in what was just said and what I was about to say. You could have heard a needle drop against the sounds of the ocean.

"You are the true life version of what I
envision when I put pen to paper.
I am honored to have met you and your staff of power, less no one here forget that without someone
as special as Maude and with the bravery to walk a life not like anyone here for she is a type of person you cling to book stores and authors for."

and the smile she had on her face was the biggest one I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing.

Remember to a fantasy author, real is real, but reality can blend to fantasy and fantasy can blend to reality... but in the end as long as,

We can stand on a beach and find a mystic woman who can become a character in a novel and turn reality into fantasy, I was truly honored...

That is the difference between a true fantasy writer and someone writing fantasy or even fiction.

I was and will always be, honored to have met her and her staff of power.

I ask that if anyone ever finds Maude on a beach or walking down the street or sitting on the bench...

That you smile and think "Fantasy."
